Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy is a form of therapy that can help you deal with the emotional response caused by a traumatic event.

Most of us will experience at least one trauma in our lives. This particular experience will not necessarily develop into post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

However, about 5 out of every 100 adults (or 5%) in the U.S. have PTSD in any given year. In 2020, about 13 million Americans had PTSD.

Women are more likely to develop PTSD than men. About 8 of every 100 women (or 8%) and 4 of every 100 men (or 4%) will have PTSD at some point in their life.

Types of Trauma Counseling Services

Trauma can include a wide range of situations, ranging from serious injury, sexual violence, and life-threatening events to chronic abuse and neglect, being bullied, and homelessness.

Here at Anew Leaf, Trauma Counseling, Naperville, we offer compassionate guidance as you navigate the complexities of trauma. Our experienced therapist is an expert in identifying and addressing the effects of traumatic experiences.

As a specialized form of therapy aimed at helping individuals who have experienced traumatic events, this process involves various tailored techniques and methodologies, reducing symptoms, and improving overall well-being.

Here’s an overview of how trauma counseling typically works:

Therapist for Trauma Experiences in Naperville

Establishing Safety

The first step in trauma counseling is creating a safe, confidential, and supportive environment

Building Trust

A strong therapeutic relationship between you and our counselor is foundational. Establishing trust can take time, but it's essential for effective trauma work.

Assessment

A thorough assessment is conducted to understand your trauma history, symptoms, and how these impact your current functioning.

Education

We often provide education on trauma and its effects, helping you understand your reactions and feelings.

Processing Trauma

This is a core part of trauma counseling, where you are assisted in safely confronting and making sense of your traumatic experiences. One of the specialities offered at Anew Leaf is EMDR therapy, a highly regarded, evidence based treatment for trauma.

Developing Coping Strategies

You will learn healthy coping strategies and skills to manage symptoms of trauma, such as anxiety, flashbacks, and sleep disturbances.

Empowerment and Rebuilding

Trauma counseling aims to empower you, helping you rebuild a sense of control and self-worth. This phase focuses on identifying strengths, fostering resilience, and setting future goals.

Integration and Growth

Ultimately, trauma counseling seeks to help you integrate your experiences into your life story without the trauma defining it.

You may have many questions or some uncertainties about starting therapy. The following are some of the most frequently asked questions and answers which we hope will address some of those issues.

Do I have to do EMDR/Trauma Work or talk about the past?

In counseling, you don’t “ have to” do anything. I may recommend EMDR or other approaches, but the choice is always yours.

Counseling is based on a trusting relationship of teamwork and not the therapist telling you what to do and you “having to” do it.

How do I get started/schedule a session?

The first step is to create a contact request using the Let’s Talk button. Then, you’ll receive a follow-up email, call, or both.
